Greensboro Crew Shines in Crosstown Duel with High Point

Oak Hollow Lake, High Point, NC – Greensboro Crew opened racing against High Point with a win in the varsity boys fours event on Saturday and closed out the morning with a middle school victory.

And along the way the team’s varsity girls squad also showed how far they have progressed with an outstanding performance as well.

Both squads should have been racing as Triad United at the Head of the James in Richmond on Saturday. That is, until Hurricane Michael struck with such heavy rainfall the James River was flooded and the regatta was cancelled.

So, High Point and Greensboro made the most of the situation with a cross-town duel.

“It was unfortunate we were not able to race at the James this weekend, but the entire team made the best of it!” said Greensboro head coach Katie Ognovich.

Coach Katie says two main themes this season for the Greensboro team is progress and adaptability. “Learning how to put the best foot forward even in hard situations is key. We haven’t been out on the water for a couple days due to the Hurricane, but the crews made the best of that situation.”

Although Hurricane Michael had well and truly passed through the Triad by Saturday its after effects were still evident. With much of Greensboro still without power many families had left town resulting in both squads operating on limited rosters.

Greensboro showed quick early speed to take the lead in the girls varsity eights race. Experience in the High Point crew carried the morning though in a hard fought race.

The final race of the morning was between middle school eights….which were actually crewed by only 6 rowers in each boat due to limited attendance. After a hard fought battle that saw the lead change constantly, Greensboro finally took home the win.

“The team is focused on making forward progress every single day, even if it’s small. Today the entire team made more progress in which they will build off of starting next week. Everyone enjoyed the racing today, but they know it is just the beginning and the real work has yet to come.

Congratulations all rowers for both races won and battles hard fought!
